Manhattan Neighborhoods

On either side of Central Park, the Upper West Side and Upper East Side feature luxurious apartment buildings and elegant historic brownstones. The Upper East Side boasts some of the world’s most sought-after real estate, along with exceptional dining and impeccably upscale shopping. The Upper West Side has a more relaxed vibe with quiet residential streets and beloved local businesses. With hundreds of galleries, Chelsea is the center of the Manhattan art scene. The Upper East Side stretch of Madison Avenue features more than 150 designer boutiques showcasing haute couture from some of the world’s premier fashion labels. These include flagship stores from Alexander McQueen, Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, and Tom Ford

The Upper East Side is also a premier dining destination, with Michelin-starred restaurants including chic French bistro Café Boloud, sublime omakase counter Sushi Noz, and the two Michelin-starred fine-dining tour de force Daniel. Another cluster of Michelin-starred restaurants at the southwest corner of Central Park features the Italian seafood specialists Marea, two-starred French institution Jean-Gorges, and two three-starred sushi destinations: hotspot Masa and luxurious Per Se

The Upper West Side’s long-standing neighborhood businesses include Jewish delicatessen Barney Greengrass, a reliable favorite for smoked fish since 1908. Chelsea Market is a gourmet food hall in the Meatpacking District offering a global culinary odyssey with more than 40 eateries. The charming streets of West Village feature inviting and romantic dining spots such as French bistros Boucherie and Pastis. Other fine dining standouts include Eleven Madison Avenue in the Flatiron District and Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare in Hell’s Kitchen. Both of these exquisite restaurants have earned three Michelin stars for their sublime and inventive cooking. Cuisine from all corners of the world is represented in Manhattan, including traditional Italian trattorias in Nolita and Little Italy and authentic Asian restaurants in Chinatown.

Things to Do

Central Park is the most famous urban greenspace on the planet. This sprawling 834-acre park features a diverse landscape of woodlands, lakes, and open lawns. Central Park is also home to attractions such as the Central Park Zoo and the wintertime Wollman Rink

Fifth Avenue’s Museum Mile on the east side of Central Park is home to world-class cultural attractions, including The Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On the west side of Central Park, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts has 30 performance facilities showcasing organizations including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York City Ballet. Other performance venues across Manhattan range from the legendary concert hall of Carnegie Hall to landmark rock clubs such as Bowery Ballroom. In West Village, Village Vanguard is a legendary jazz club where past performers have included Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The Broadway Theater District’s bright lights illuminate 41 professional theaters showcasing the world’s most spectacular productions and big-name performers. The arts hub of Chelsea features over 350 art galleries spanning a huge variety of styles and artists. 

The nearby High Line provides great skyline views along a repurposed plant-lined elevated rail trail. For sweeping views over all this incredible island offers, head to the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western hemisphere at The Edge in Hudson Yards.
